The Sciatica Nerve
This is the largest nerve in the body--it
extends from the lower spine down the back of the thigh to the knee. There it divides, and one nerve goes down the front,
and the other down the back of the lower leg.
Inflamation of
the sciatica nerve is most frequently triggered by an irritated nerve root. A misalignment in the spinal column can irritate
the roots of the sciatic nerve as they pass between the vertebrae.
Pain
from the sciatica nerve is often referred to as a "shooting pain". It moves up and down the nerve
and stabs you with sharp, agonizing pains. Sometimes it can even cause a wasting away of calf muscles. Patients often compare
their pain level to the worst toothache imaginable.
Areas
Affected
Sciatica only affects the hip, the thigh
and the back of the leg--sometimes the ankle and foot. It may hit all those points at once, or it may skip about from point
to point.
Victims often times seek relief through hot or cold
applications, they try to soothe the place that hurts, but this is fruitless, as the source is 'way off--up in the lower back'.
